Winter on Crete
Wintertime on Crete, that’s a green landscape, blue sea and snow on top of the high mountains. Flowers and wild vegetables are growing in the fertile planes. The average temperature on the south coast is approx. 10 to 20 degrees.
OLIVE HARVEST AND PRODUCTION OF OLIVE OIL – WILD VEGETABLES AND HERBS
Day one
Arrival
Transfer from Heraklion airport to the accommodation in Mirtos
Depending on the arrival time there will be a welcome meeting with Angela. She introduces the program of the whole week and offers a drink. In the case of a late arrival the meeting will be next morning after breakfast.
Day two
Get in touch
Free time in the morning, in the afternoon we have a relaxed walk through the orange- and olivegardens in the valley behind Mirtos. During the walk you get a small introduction to the importance of olive oil and the way of harvesting it.
Day three
Harvest
Today is harvest time. After breakfast we go to the olive grove of local people. We help the owners of the field and get an impression of the harvest process. Traditionally we have our picnic at the field.
Day four
Olive oil mill
We visit a typical local olive oil press in the region to watch the whole pressing process and also the atmosphere there. The press is a meeting point for the farmers, where news and development are discussed.
Day five
Ancient olive tree
We drive to the northcoast and walk to an very old olive tree. After we have an olive oil tasting and learn about the project of protection of ancient olive trees.
Day six
Natural food
The walk in the late morning hours in the surroundings of Mirtos or a drive in the neighbour villages is meant to find and collect wild vegetables (Chorta). With a local lady we will learn about the preparation of traditional dishes with wild and garden greens and eat it together at dinner time.
Day seven
It is time to walk
A longer walk of approx. 4 – 5 hours, depending on the weather conditions, in the higher mountain regions or along the coast.
After the walk, we’ll have a light lunch in a local tavern.

Departure
Transfer to the airport of Heraklion
